Energy saving settings - 7/9

The graphic interface and the settings of your pc could be different from the ones taken back here. For this reason you refer to the manual of your mother card for greater information and specific settings.

Power Management

In this area the settings are present for the modes of energy saving. When the pc is on and is not used, the same one can automatically enter an operating state in which the current consumption is reduced, with the following advantages:

- decrease of the costs on the bill of the electric energy
- considerably lasted superior of the drums in case of the portable ones
- better reliability of the data in the disc units owed to a reduced usury
- prolongation of the useful life of the members of the computer, above all of the monitor

To the pressure of a key, the computer goes out of the hibernation state and goes back to the normal operating mode.

Funzionalità ACPI

The ACPI standard (Advanced Configuration and Interface power) allows the operating system directly to check the functions of energy saving and the PnP (Plug and Play) functionality. The ACPI functions are normally activated by the BIOS, however the support also of other members and specific conditions is necessary made:

- the operating system must fully support the functionalities PnP and ACPI ( operating Windows 98 arranges if or superior )
- everybody the devices and the installed peripherals must be certificates for the PnP support and of the energetivo saving
- the mother card must be of the ATX type for a checked of the feeding by software
- all the driver and the software of management of the installed hardware must be compatible with such functionalities.

If the computer works correctly, we advise not to modify the present specific settings on the energy saving inside the BIOS. If instead the computer has some problems with the state to low energy consumption, or it wishes to modify the times of wait before the activation of this mode, we advise to modify the settings inside the operating system before and possibly act inside the BIOS.

ATTENTION: if the computer works correctly, do not modify the settaggi for the energy saving. On a few systems could not be possible start the operating system forcing to a reinstallation of the itself one. Only modifying the settings before the installation of the operating system is consiglibile, so that the same set up in an appropriate way every single device.

Energy savings mode [Enabled/Disabled]

This option checks the mode of the energy saving. On most cards mothers are predefiniti possible levels in which choosing the amount of saved energy is possible:

- Normal: no control for the energy saving
- Doze: low level of energy saving
- Standby: intermediate level of energy saving with standby of the system
- Suspend: high level of energy saving with hybernation

In alternative specific settings can be choices for every peripheral on the times of wait before entering the state than low energy consumption. We advise any way from these modifications against as the predefinite settings are generally the best ones.

Note: some peripherals can not support the manual modification of the energy saving and they reduce the control to the operating system. If they have some problems installing the most recent driver for the mother card and all the peripherals is advisable in that case.

ACPI Suspend Type [S1-POS/S3-STR]

This option specifies what technology must be used for the state of hibernation, everybody of which it is characterized by a different behaviour:

Stato S1 o POS (Power On Suspend):
- The processor does not execute instructions but it remains connected to the bus; the state and the content of his internal registers is kept.
- The dynamic context of the memory is kept.
- The feeding of the not necessary devices is deactivated.
- The feeding of the devices qualified for waking up is kept.
- When a waking up event happens, the devices which can wake up the system force all the peripherals to rebe linked.

Stato S3 o STR (Suspend To RAM):
- The processor does not execute instructions, and the state and the content of his internal registers is not kept.
- The dynamic context of the memory is kept.
- The feeding of the not necessary and not connected devices is deactivated.
- The feeding of the devices qualified for waking up is kept.
- When a waking up event is verified, the devices which can wake up the system restore the content of the registers of the processor and force all the peripherals to rebe linked.

ATTENTION: the S3 state consumes less energy with respect to the S2 state and is therefore recommended for the notebooks. These last ones have a better support for the functionalities of energy saving, while for the computers gathered with members of many technological generations the S3 state could not be fully compatible and prevent the revival of the system. It is possible to try to bring all the driver of the system up to date to improve the compatibility. The operating system must be in fact able to create an image in memory of the processor and content state of the internal registers (cache memories), operation which not always follows a deterministic trend.

PM Control by APM [Yes/No]

This option qualifies the PM (management power) for being checked according to the specifications dictated by the APM standard (Advanced management power) written by the producing majors of hardware and software. Only modifying this voice if remarkable incompatibility problems are compared with peripherals not corresponding to the ACPI specifications is advisable.

Video OFF Option [Always On/Suspend -> Off/All Modes -> Off]

This seglie option what mode the screen must be turned off in:
- Always On: the screen is not turned off
- Off Suspend->: the screen is turned off when the pc is in mode 'Suspend'
- Off All->: the screen is turned off in any energy saving mode

Video Off Method [Blank Screen/V-H Sync + Blank/DPMS Support]

This option shows the switching off mode for the screen:

- Blank Screen: the screen does not receive any display signal. Setting modifies for old monitors.
- V/H Synch+Blank: the screen receives the synchronism signal without signal of the colour. Some monitors work only with this setting.
- DPMS Support: the screen receives the signal for the best energy saving. Setting modifies only for the monitors which support the DPMS standard.

Modem use IRQ [3/4/5/7/9/10/11/NA/Back to 3]

This option reserves the IRQ shown for allowing the revival of the system when receives a call. To deactivate the option set up NA (Not Available). Note: if your pc does not make the session closure correctly after using the modem, you try to change this setting.

Soft-Off by Power Button [Instant OffEnabled/Delay 4 sec.]

This option regulates the mode of manual switching off of the computer through the pressure of the ignition key. When the computer is on instantaneously turning the computer off or it is pressed after 4 second than the key is possible. In the first case the switching off takes place from a control by software. If the computer is blocked, the switching off of the pc in instantaneous way could not be possible it and therefore the disconnection of the feeding is due to the monitoring circuitry.

Wake Up Events

This menu allows to check the devices and the peripherals which can awake the system from a state of hibernation. The waking up is always caused by a particular event which can come or less recognized as I validate according to the assigned settings.

VGA (Video Graphic Adapter): if enabled specification than any noticed event from ' graphic adapter or from the visualization device (like a request for attention by the monitor) the computer must make go out from the hibernation state to meet the request.

LPT & COM (porta parallela e seriale): if enabled specifies that any event noticed on the doors as suitable (as the request for attention by an outside device) must make the computer go out from the hibernation state to meet the request.

HDD & FDD (Hard Disk Drive & Floppy Disk Drive): if enabled specifies that any event noticed on such units (as a request for access to a file) must make the computer go out from the hibernation state to meet the request.

PCI Master (Peripheral Component Interconnect ): if enabled the computer specifies that any signal noticed on the PCI bus channel master must make go out from the hibernation state.

PowerOn by PCI Card: if enabled specifies that any event coming from a PCI card (as a request for exchange dates on the bus) must make the computer go out from the hibernation state to meet the request.

Wake UpOn LAN/Ring: (awake from Local network area/call): if enabled specification than any event noticed on the cable of the local net or the telephone line ( been like a request for computer waking up linked to the net or an incoming telephone call ) must make the computer go out from the hibernation state to meet the request.

RTC Alarm Resume (Real Time Clock): if enabled specifies that the internal watch of the computer is authorized to light the pc at the specified time. Inserting in the suitable field the date and exact time to which the pc wishes to make automatically light is necessary. This functionality is very useful to automate some activities planned, as the download, the connection to remote nets and the monitoring of environments to distance. Through the operating system automatically throwing the applicatory ones is possible wished and at last plan the automatic switching off of the computer.

ATTENTION: this option is activateable only on systems equipped with card mother and alimentatore ATX which must remain perennially connected to the net of electric feeding. Keep always present that factors which can prevent from reaching the prearranged aims can replace ( problems in the loading of the operating system, crash of the applications, problems in session closing etc. ). for which it is heartily recommended to create a stable system without no compromise. This aim is reachable adopting a specific computer thought only for the suitable purpose (server platform) easily.

Primary INTR (IRQ Monitoring)

This option monitors wich of the following events of INTR (Interrupt), for any IRQ (Interrupt ReQuest) assigned, can awake the system from hybernation: IRQ3 (COM2), IRQ4 (COM1), IRQ5 (LPT2), IRQ6 (FDD), IRQ7 (LPT1), IRQ8 (RTC), IRQ9 (IRQ2 redirect), IRQ10 (reserved), IRQ11 (reserved), IRQ12 (PS2/Mouse), IRQ13 (coprocessor), IRQ14 (HDD), IRQ15 (reserved). One advises only to modify the options if they have problems or specific demands due to the waking up from an event which can be ignored.
